About this collection

The Waverly Phoenix was a Democratic weekly German-language newspaper published from 1884-1924 in Waverly, IA (Bremer County). Some of the articles are of special interest, as they reflect the experiences and viewpoints of first and second generation German immigrants who had settled in Iowa and particularly the Waverly area. Also included in this newspaper is coverage of World War I. In 1924 the paper was subsumed by the English-language Waverly Democrat which is still published today.
